We are a family-run company based on values like traditional craftsmanship and the highest quality, as well as respect for humankind and the environment.

This includes sustainability on an economic, ecological and social level. Not as lip-service, but as the enshrined programme and practised mission of our action.

Using our planet and its resources responsibly is important for the life and survival of future generations. That is why we understand sustainability as the principle not to consume more than can be renewed, regenerated or provided in future.

PICARD complies with the REACH regulation applicable to all chemicals. The European Union’s REACH (“Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals”) regulation was adopted to give better protection to human health and the environment against risks that chemicals may pose. Every leather processed by PICARD is tested. Our factories are also scrutinised in turn by the experts of the PFI Group (Prüf- und Forschungsinstitut Pirmasens e.V. ).

When using and disposing of chemicals – for tanning leather, for instance – we comply worldwide with European Standards, even if the local requirements are often much less stringent.

As an example, our sole leather supplier in Bangladesh belongs to the one per cent of companies connected to the Water Treatment System: only purified and treated water is fed back into the water cycle.

Where possible PICARD relies on renewable energies. For instance, at our HQ in Germany we generate electricity using photovoltaics.

The commitment to sustainability applies equally to the social dimension – to relations with people in different cultural circles. In Germany and in all the other countries we operate in, our aim is to maintain traditions, secure jobs, constantly improve production and safety standards, and guarantee fair pay. We are opposed to child labour.

We ensure the highest standards by having a majority shareholding in each production site and not delegating responsibility to subcontractors.

We oblige our raw material suppliers all over the world to comply with the same ecological and social standards. We submit to monitoring by external partners to ensure the high standards of human dignity, product quality and responsibility for the environment in the long run worldwide.

Our Code of Conduct (CoC) defines the minimum standards to which our partners in the supply chain must conform. It is also an integral part of our procurement contracts.

Here is the PICARD Code of Conduct (Version 11/2014).
